Is Your Vehicle Road-Ready? Here’s Why It Should Be.

As summer travel ramps up, so do the risks. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, over 13,000 lives are lost on U.S. roads, and many of those tragedies are linked to simple, unperformed vehicle maintenance. According to the NHTSA, over 2,600 deaths and 100,000 serious injuries each year are caused by neglecting routine car care—adding up to billions in medical bills, lost wages, and property damage.

The truth? Most mechanical breakdowns are preventable. Take overheating, for example—it’s the #1 cause of roadside failures, and it can usually be avoided by checking your coolant level, replacing worn belts, or inspecting hoses. Even tire pressure, something you can check for free, is often overlooked. During National Car Care Month, 1 in 5 cars had underinflated tires, raising the risk of a blowout and a major accident.

Simple Habits That Save Fuel (and Money)

The Car Care Council shares these smart fuel-saving tips:

✅ Gas Caps

A loose or missing gas cap may not seem like a big deal—but it causes 147 million gallons of fuel to evaporate every year. Make sure yours is tight and in good shape.

✅ Tire Pressure

Driving with underinflated tires is like dragging a weight behind your car. You’ll lose 1–2 miles per gallon or more. Check and adjust your pressure regularly.

✅ Spark Plugs

These tiny parts fire millions of times every few hundred miles. Dirty or worn plugs reduce fuel efficiency and cause misfires. Replace them as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

✅ Air Filters

A clogged air filter forces your engine to burn more fuel. Just replacing a dirty filter can improve mileage by up to 10%.

✅ Drive Smarter

Quick starts and sudden stops waste fuel. Smooth driving can improve your gas mileage by 5% in town and up to 33% on the highway.

✅ Reduce Idling

Idling burns fuel without going anywhere. Limit warm-ups to 1–2 minutes and turn off your engine if you’re stopped for long.

✅ Watch Your Speed

Gas mileage drops quickly above 60 mph. Every extra mile per hour costs you money. Use cruise control when possible to maintain a steady pace.

Pre-Trip Checklist: Just 10 Minutes for a Safer Journey

Before hitting the road, take a few minutes to check your vehicle. Here’s what to look at:

🔧 Fluids

Your engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering, and windshield washer fluid all play vital roles. Our team at E-Z Automotive can top off and inspect each one quickly and efficiently.

🔩 Belts & Hoses

Belts keep your engine running in sync. If one fails, it could cause major damage. Our technicians inspect for cracks, wear, and alignment to avoid serious issues.

🛞 Tires

Check tire pressure, tread wear, and overall condition. Uneven wear may indicate the need for an alignment. Look for bulges, bald spots, or any damage that could affect safety or handling.

Why It All Matters

A quick inspection now can save you from a roadside emergency later. Plus, having work done by your trusted local mechanic—before you leave—means fewer surprises on the road.

“A last-minute check is better than nothing—but planning ahead is the key to safety, reliability, and even fuel savings,” says Rich White, Executive Director of the Car Care Council. “A well-maintained vehicle isn’t just safer—it’s also easier on your wallet.”
